The Hunger problem is real. Mostly children, older adults, seniors, and women. Add quite a few of working people also to hunger that list. In many cases, working multiple jobs, but still can’t make ends meet. 1 out of every 5 residents in America’s largest City , New York, needs an Emergency feeding program. Many of us are only one crisis away from completely going under . The Food Bank for New York City is giving dignity to fellow human beings at a very difficult time, a time of need. I tip my hat not just to the organization, but to the weekly 800 volunteers that step up.There is never anything wrong with declaring you need help in one capacity or another.

Please meet 14 year old Elijah. I raised my left arm high up in the air and said to him “High five…can I get a high five.” Elijah complied . Elijah’s pleasant demeanor and contagious smile stands out.  Elijah is 14 years old but has fallen behind in school. He’s only in the 5th grade and reads on a 1st grade level.  A homeless shelter I mentioned in a blog post is titled, the “Hotel Lynx.” Elijah and his mom Audry Martinez live there. They have been in NYC shelters for the last 2 and a half years. When talking to Elijah’s mom she told me that in a million years that she never thought she would find herself in this situation. When we were in their living quarters on the fourth floor, of the “Hotel Lynx,” all of their possessions were in this one cramped room. You had to sign in with security in the lobby with photo I.D, and then security escorted you to an office, where you had to sign in again with photo I.D again This was all a serious reality check. These days, we (me and my buddies) are looking forward to, dear I say…our Golden years. Growing up, none of us ever thought about that. Certainly we didn’t talk about it. I was convinced that I would never live to see the age of 40. But then a very important friend told me to stop saying that because words are very powerful. It was a tremendous life lesson. I’m proud to say I made it past 40, and I’m now 54 years old. This is a piece that is about 24 hours I recently spent in Atlanta, Georgia .
