The Power of Community Connections

After more than four decades as a journalist, television reporter, radio host, author, and keynote speaker, one thing remains true:

The most meaningful part of my work is meeting people.

That's why I'm excited to spend time in Astoria, Queens, at the Astoria Summer Jam Community Fair.

Community events provide a wonderful opportunity to connect with listeners, readers, parents, grandparents, caregivers, veterans, small business owners, and young people who represent the very best of America.

From Foster Care to Broadcasting

My own journey began under difficult circumstances.

As a young child, I entered foster care before eventually being raised by my grandmother in the Bronx.

My mother struggled with severe mental illness, and my father was largely absent from my life.

Those experiences shaped my perspective and continue to influence my work today.

They also remind me that every person has a story worth hearing.

The event takes place on Broadway between 46th Street and 47th Street in Astoria and is part of a seven-block celebration that brings together people from throughout New York City and the Tri-State area.

Throughout the summer, I'll be visiting communities across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

I'll be meeting listeners, readers, families, foster parents, kinship caregivers, community leaders, and friends.

We'll be taking photos, signing books, sharing stories, and enjoying the opportunity to connect face-to-face.
